Practical Advanced Protection Training at The Faraday Centre

Protection of Electrical Power Systems

At The Faraday Centre, we are constantly looking into improving and implementing new innovative ways to enhance our training courses. One of the ways by which we try to improve is simply by listening to the needs of our customers. This is why, after having received multiple requests and suggestions from our course attendees, we have decided to create a brand-new protection training course.

The P3 ‘Practical Advanced Protection Training’

The Practical Advanced Protection Training course will be a further development of our popular P1.

Firstly, it will dig further into the topic of Power Systems Protection with an emphasis on practical training. Secondly, the course will allow our candidates to delve deeper into Feeder, Transformer and Generator protection. This will be done in conjunction with a practical demonstration of the new principles using a number of different Protection Relays including ABB, SEL, and MiCom.

Each candidate (working as a single or a pair) will have a dedicated workstation with 3 different protection relays, a laptop to work with and a dedicated secondary test injection set. Additionally, the candidates will receive a series of workbooks to complete which will cover fault level calculations and relevant settings for a relay, for example,

  • IDMTL
  • Instantaneous
  • Earth Fault
  • Negative
  • Zero Phase Sequence

After inputting the calculated settings, candidates will conduct a series of functional relay tests. From initial ‘Fit for Purpose’ and final acceptance to sign off. In addition, custom test result forms will be completed to form final evidence of course completion.

The small class size of 6 people per course will allow for a more individual approach. As a result, the course lecturer will be in a position to give each candidate all the help and instruction they require throughout the training period. Our aim is to make sure that no one feels out of their depth as we take great pride in guiding and helping each trainee as much as they require. We always strive to coach and empower each individual to reach their full potential. Visit the link below to see what course attendees have to say about it:
